Halwa Puri Meal

﷽ Halwa Puri Meal | A Homemade Weekend Breakfast Feast

There's nothing quite like a traditional Halwa Puri breakfast. Crispy, golden puris served with comforting Chole Ka Salan (chickpea curry), flavourful Aloo Ki Tarkari (potato curry), and sweet, fragrant Sooji Ka Halwa (semolina pudding) make the perfect combination for a special family breakfast, weekend brunch, or festive gathering.
This is how I prepare a complete Halwa Puri meal at home. While it may seem like a lot of dishes, with a little planning everything comes together beautifully. Most of the components can even be prepared in advance, making the cooking process much easier.

The Complete Meal Includes
  • Crispy, puffed Puris
  • Chole Ka Salan (Spiced Chickpea Curry)
  • Aloo Ki Tarkari (Potato Curry)
  • Sooji Ka Halwa (sweet semolina pudding)
  • Pickles
A hearty and satisfying meal that's perfect for sharing with family and friends. Every bite is worth the effort!

Puri (Crispy Fried Bread)

Ingredients

  • Whole wheat flour (atta)
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1–2 tsp ghee or oil
  • Water, as needed
  • Oil, for deep frying

Method

Make the Dough
  • Mix the flour, salt, and ghee or oil. Gradually add water and knead into a soft yet firm dough. Cover and rest for 15–20 minutes.

Choose Your Preparation Method

  • Roll & Fry Immediately
    • Divide the dough into small balls, roll into circles, and deep fry in medium-hot oil until puffed and golden on both sides.

  • Roti Maker (Make-Ahead Method)
    • Press small dough balls in a roti maker until lightly cooked. Allow them to cool completely, then refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Fry just before serving.
  • Prepare Dough Balls Ahead
    • Shape the dough into small balls and refrigerate. Roll and fry fresh whenever needed.

Frying Tips

  • The oil should be hot enough for the puris to puff immediately, but not so hot that they brown too quickly.
  • If the oil is too cool, the puris will absorb oil and remain flat.
  • Properly heated oil allows the puris to sink briefly, puff up beautifully, then float to the surface.

Sooji Ka Halwa (Sweet Semolina Pudding)

A rich, aromatic semolina pudding flavoured with cardamom, saffron, and rose water. Soft, comforting, and perfect as part of a traditional Halwa Puri breakfast or served as a simple dessert.

Ingredients

  • 2–3 tbsp ghee
  • A handful of mixed nuts and raisins
  • ⅓ cup semolina (sooji)
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ tsp cardamom powder
  • ¼ Cup raw sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 200 ml boiling water
  • Optional
    • A few saffron strands
    • 1 tbsp rose water
    • 1–2 tbsp milk

Method

  • Heat a little ghee and fry the nuts until golden. Add the raisins, cook for a few seconds, then remove and set aside.
  • Add more ghee if needed and roast the semolina over low heat until lightly golden and fragrant.
  • Stir in the salt, cardamom powder, and sugar.
  • Gradually pour in the boiling water, beginning with about half and adding the rest little by little while stirring continuously until smooth.
  • For extra flavour, soak the saffron in rose water and add it to the halwa. Rinse the bowl with the milk and pour that in as well. Finish with another spoonful of ghee for added richness.
  • Fold in the fried nuts and raisins, transfer to a serving dish, cover, and allow it to rest for a few minutes. The halwa will continue to thicken as it cools.
Tip: Adjust the amount of water depending on whether you prefer a softer or firmer halwa.

Cook the Chickpeas & Potatoes

This base is used for both the chickpea curry and the potato curry, making preparation quicker and easier.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked overnight (or 1 can chickpeas)
  • 1 large potato, peeled
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Water, enough to cover

Method

If Using Dried Chickpeas

  • Pressure cook the soaked chickpeas and whole potato together with the turmeric, salt, and enough water to cover.
  • Cook until one whistle, then reduce the heat and cook for another 15 minutes.
  • Allow the pressure to release naturally.

If Using Canned Chickpeas

  • Simply boil the peeled potato until tender. Drain the canned chickpeas and they're ready to use.

Chole Ka Salan (Easy Chickpeas Curry)

This easy and delicious chickpea curry is the perfect companion to a traditional Halwa Puri breakfast. It's mildly spiced, comforting, and made with simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Cooked Chick peas
  • Oil
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • Whole Spices
    • ½ tsp cumin seeds
    • ½ tsp fennel seeds
    • ½ tsp nigella seeds (kalonji)
    • ½ tsp mustard seeds
    • ½ tsp fenugreek seeds
  • Spice Mix
    • ½–¾ tsp turmeric powder
    • ½–¾ tsp coriander powder
    • ½–¾ tsp amchur (dried mango powder)
    • 1 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder or paprika
    • 1 tsp black pepper powder

  • 1 tbsp jaggery or brown sugar (optional)
  • Fresh coriander or parsley
  • Tempering
    • 1–2 tbsp ghee
    • ½ tsp paprika or chilli powder

Method

  • Blend about ¼–½ cup of the cooked chickpeas with a little cooking liquid until smooth. This naturally thickens the curry.
  • Heat oil in a pan and sauté the ginger-garlic paste.
  • Add all the whole spices and allow them to splutter.
  • Reduce the heat, stir in the prepared spice paste, and cook until fragrant.
  • Add the blended chickpea mixture and cook until the oil begins to separate.
  • Pour in a little water, followed by the remaining cooked chickpeas and their cooking liquid.
  • Bring to a boil, then simmer gently for 5–10 minutes.
  • Add jaggery if using and adjust the seasoning.
  • Tempering
    • Heat the ghee, switch off the heat, stir in the paprika, then pour over the curry.
  • Finish with freshly chopped coriander or parsley.

Aloo Ki Tarkari (Simple Potato Curry)

    • Fennel seeds
    • Mustard seeds
    • Nigella seeds
    • A pinch of fenugreek seeds
  • Paprika
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp amchur (dried mango powder)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Water, as needed
  • Fresh coriander or parsley, chopped

Method

  • Add the tomato, turmeric, coriander powder, and amchur. Cook until the oil begins to separate.
  • Stir in the mashed potato and add enough water to reach your preferred consistency.
