Orange Chicken Recipe

🍊 Orange Chicken Recipe

🐔 Ingredients

For the Chicken

  • 350–400 g boneless chicken, cut into bite-sized cubes

  • 1 egg

  • 2–3 tbsp yogurt

  • Salt, to taste

  • Pepper, to taste

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp oregano

For the Coating

  • 1 tbsp rice flour

  • 1 tbsp cornflour

  • Salt, to taste

  • Oil, for deep frying

For the Orange Sauce

  • 250 ml orange juice (fresh or packet juice) Fresh is more flavourful. I prefer Almarai mixed orange juice if using packet. Other 100% orange juice works well too .

  • Pinch of orange zest

  • 1 tbsp jaggery or brown sugar (add more if you prefer sweeter)

  • ¾ tbsp soy sauce

  • ¾ tbsp vinegar

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • Salt, to taste

  • Chilli flakes, to taste

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (mixed with a little water to make a slurry)

For the Stir-Fry & Garnish

  • 1 tbsp sesame oil

  • 2–3 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 tbsp finely chopped ginger

  • 2–3 tbsp chopped spring onion (white and green parts separated)

  • 1 tbsp honey

  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

  • Grated carrot, for garnish

  • Lettuce and orange slices (optional, for serving)

1. Marinate the Chicken

  1. In a bowl, mix together chicken, egg, yogurt, salt, pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and oregano.

  2. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 hours for more flavor).

2. Coat and Fry

  1. In another bowl, mix all-purpose flour, rice flour, cornflour, and salt.

  2. Dredge marinated chicken pieces in the flour mixture until evenly coated.

  3. Deep-fry in hot oil until golden brown and crispy.

  4. Drain on a paper towel and set aside.

3. Prepare the Orange Sauce

  1. In a bowl, combine orange juice, orange zest, soy sauce, vinegar, jaggery/brown sugar, paprika, salt, and chilli flakes. Mix well.

  2. Heat sesame oil in a pan or wok.

  3. Add garlic, ginger, and the white part of the spring onions. Sauté for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.

  4. Pour in the orange sauce mixture and bring it to a boil.

  5. Add the cornstarch slurry and cook until the sauce thickens slightly.

  6. Stir in honey for extra shine and flavor.

4. Combine

  1. Add the fried chicken pieces to the sauce.

  2. Toss well until all pieces are evenly coated in the glossy orange sauce.

5. Garnish & Serve

  1. Sprinkle sesame seeds, grated carrot, and the green part of the spring onions on top.

  2. For extra flavor and presentation, serve over a bed of lettuce and orange slices.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions & Tips.

  • Enjoy with steamed rice, noodles, bao buns, or even pasta.

  • Using freshly squeezed orange juice gives a brighter, fresher flavor, but 100% packet juice (like Almarai Mixed Orange Juice) works beautifully too.

  • You can even try red orange juice for a unique twist.

  • Add more sugar or Jaggery to make it sweeter.

  • Adjust the cornstarch in sauce to adjust the consistency. I served with rice and preferred thinner sauce. If using for bao buns I will add bit more cornstarch to make the sauce thicker.
